I’m working with the various earnings variables in the CPS, and notice that observations in 2022 are missing inflation-adjusted values (for EARNWEEK, HOURWAGE, along with the DWS variables, DWWAGEC, DWWAGEL, DWWEEKC, DWWEEKL). I’m struggling to re-create the values IPUMS has generated for earlier years. Would it be possible for IPUMS to replace the missing 2022 observations? Or else, could you share how you convert the reported values to 2010 dollars? Thanks.
Thank you for pointing this out. I will let the IPUMS CPS team know that the adjusted monetary values for the ASEC income variables (INCTOT, INCWAGE, etc.) are not available for 2022. In the meantime, you can adjust manually by adding CPI99 to your extract, multiplying the income variable by CPI99, and then multiplying by the value for your desired year from Table 2 at this page. For 2010 dollars you would multiply by 1.309.
Please note that the other income variables (from ORG and DW supplement) appear to be properly adjusted, when I downloaded an extract. Can you double check that you are not seeing these adjusted variables in 2022?
That’s odd. I just redownloaded the DW and ORG supplement earnings variables, along with the adjusted variables, and for 2022, I’m still seeing missing values? I’m not sure what the issue is…
Apologies for the long delay. Actually I don’t know why I thought the ORG and DW variables were adjusted properly; I checked again and they were missing for me, too. Sorry for the confusion. This should be updated in the next 1-2 months. In the meantime, you can use the procedure I outlined in my earlier post.
No worries! Yes, I ended up using the procedure you mentioned; thank you. Also, I’m glad to hear I wasn’t seeing things, or mistaken.
