Labor force by children in the household

Hello,

I think there is something strange with the county-level table B23003 from 2010 American Community Survey: 5-Year Data [2006-2010, Block Groups & Larger Areas].

It is called “Presence of Own Children Under 18 Years by Age of Own Children Under 18 Years by Employment Status for Females 20 to 64 Years”

It is broken down into:

JQ0E002: With own children under 18 years
JQ0E003: With own children under 18 years: Under 6 years only
JQ0E010: With own children under 18 years: Under 6 years and 6 to 17 years
JQ0E017: With own children under 18 years: 6 to 17 years only

What does the label for JQ0E010 mean? Also, from looking at the data it seems that JQ0E002=JQ0E003+JQ0E010+JQ0E017 – but that seems conceptually wrong? Baes on the labels, shouldn’t JQ0E002 and JQ0E010 be the same thing? And soJQ0E010=JQ0E003+JQ0E017? Thanks.

Dear Giulia,

I’ve had trouble interpreting the categories in this table in the past!

JQ0E010 means that the female has at least one own child under 6 years of age and at least one own child age 6 to 17 years of age. JQ0E003 means that the female has at least one own child under 6 years and no other own children 6 to 17 years of age. JQ0E017 means that the female has at least one own child age 6 to 17 years and no own children under age 6. Thus, these three categories are mutually exclusive, and the sum JQ0E002=JQ0E003+JQ0E010+JQ0E017 holds.

Sincerely,

Oh, that makes so much sense after your explanation. Those labels were really throwing me off. Thank you so much!!

Best,
