We are using data from the US/International files for 23 countries. We need to calculate the labor force participation rate and need to know if the EMPSTAT distribution to the non-institutionalized population in each country and census.
As described in the EMPSTAT Comparability Statement on IPUMS-International, it is important to look into the enumeration materials (available in the Questionnaire Text tab and on the Source Documents page). The Enumeration instructions will give some insight into whether or not institutionalliezed individuals were included in the question. Generally, the Universe Statement, in combination with the sample description’s definition of the population univers will detail if the institutionalized population was included in the question, but it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the source documentation as well.
