Does category "single" in marst, includes only those who never formally married or also those who never cohabited?
The exact definition of MARST=“1: Single/never married” varies depending on the country and year. In the large majority of samples, “Single/never married” does not exclude those who have ever cohabited. You can use the detailed codes to identify the exact contents of MARST=1, in order to detect how persons who have previously cohabited were coded. In other words, some samples used “111: Never married and never cohabited” instead of “100: Single/never married.”
On the MARST variable page, you can also find the enumerator instructions and the exact question asked to respondents for each sample. This will help determine the specific classification used to code respondents.
Hope this helps.
