Crosswalk occupation DHS codes to IPUMS codes Senegal

Hi all,

I would like to know how IPUMS coded the professions from the DHS surveys in Senegal. So which code in the DHS sample corresponds to the codes in the IPUMS sample for the IPUMS variable wkcurrjob (DHS variable name is v716). Is there any possibility of knowing this?

Thank you so much.

Best,
Regina

I’m not sure which sample(s) you are interested in, but I can share the scheme that IPUMS DHS used to recode this variable in the 2016 Senegal sample and summarize any changes across schemes. You should note that occupational data already comes coded into broad occupation categories from the DHS. In 2016, the categories released by the DHS in v716 and their corresponding codes in IPUMS DHS variable WKCURRJOB were:

  • “Not working” (v716 = 0, coded into WKCURRJOB = 00)
  • “Professional/technical/managerial” (v716 = 1, WKCURRJOB = 10)
  • “Clerical” (v716 = 2, WKCURRJOB = 20)
  • “Sales” (v716 = 3, WKCURRJOB = 20)
  • “Agricultural - self employed” (v716 = 4, WKCURRJOB = 31)
  • “Agricultural - employee” (v716 = 5, WKCURRJOB = 32)
  • “Household and domestic” (v716 = 6, WKCURRJOB = 41)
  • “Services” (v716 = 7, WKCURRJOB = 42), “skilled manual” (v716 = 8, WKCURRJOB = 51)
  • “Unskilled manual” (v716 = 9, WKCURRJOB = 52)
  • “Other” (v716 = 996, WKCURRJOB = 96)
  • “Don’t know” (v716 = 998, WKCURRJOB = 97)

For the 2010-2015 and 2017 samples, the only difference was that “clerical” (v716 = 2) was coded into WKCURRJOB = 21 while “sales” (v716 = 3) was recoded into WKCURRJOB = 22. If you are interested in a different or additional sample, please follow up, and I can provide you with the correspondence between the original DHS categories and the IPUMS DHS categories for those samples.

Thanks so much, Ivan. This is already super helpful!

I am actually interested in all the available samples for Senegal so from 1986 to 2017. Do you also know the same scheme for the years 1986, 1992, 1997 and 2005?

WKCURRJOB is not available for the 1986 Senegal sample. It does not appear that occupation was asked in the 1986 questionnaire of female respondents. This sample does include variables that report if the female respondent was currently working (CURRWORK) and on her husband’s occupation (HUSJOB).

In my previous response, I reported the values from the DHS variable V716 (“respondent’s occupation”) as per your inquiry; however, IPUMS DHS actually uses V717(“respondent’s occupation (grouped)”) to create WKCURRJOB. In the 2010-2017 DHS, the labels and counts for these variables are identical in the Senegal data, but that is not true for all years. Some samples do not include labels for V716 (1992, 2005), while others have different codes and labels between V716 and V717 (1997). Because IPUMS DHS uses V717 to create WKCURRJOB, I am providing a crosswalk using this variable below. I hope this is helpful. Note that you could also merge the original DHS data onto your IPUMS DHS extract (see details about linking keys from The DHS Program) to explore how V716 relates to V717 and WKCURRJOB.

Crosswalk from v717 to WKCURRJOB for the 1992 and 1997 samples:

  • “Not working” (v717 = 0, coded into WKCURRJOB = 00)
  • “Prof., Tech., Manag. ” (v717 = 1 , WKCURRJOB = 10)
  • “Clerical” (v717 = 2, WKCURRJOB = 21)
  • “Sales” (v717 = 3, WKCURRJOB = 22)
  • “Agric-self employed” (v717 = 4, WKCURRJOB = 30)
  • “Agric-employee” (v717 = 5, WKCURRJOB = 30)
  • “Household and domestic” (v717 = 6, WKCURRJOB = 40)
  • “Services” (v717 = 7, WKCURRJOB = 40)
  • “Skilled manual” (v717 = 8, WKCURRJOB = 50)
  • “Unskilled manual” (v717 = 9, WKCURRJOB = 50)
  • “Other” (v717 = 10, WKCURRJOB = 96)
  • “Don’t know” (v717 = 98, WKCURRJOB = 97)
  • Missing (v717 = 99, WKCURRJOB = 98)

Crosswalk from v717 to WKCURRJOB for the 2005 sample:

  • “Not working” (v717 = 0, coded into WKCURRJOB = 00)
  • “Prof., Tech., Manag. ” (v717 = 1 , WKCURRJOB = 10)
  • “Clerical” (v717 = 2, WKCURRJOB = 20)
  • “Sales” (v717 = 3, WKCURRJOB = 20)
  • “Agric-self employed” (v717 = 4, WKCURRJOB = 31)
  • “Agric-employee” (v717 = 5, WKCURRJOB = 32)
  • “Household and domestic” (v717 = 6, WKCURRJOB = 40)
  • “Services” (v717 = 7, WKCURRJOB = 40)
  • “Skilled manual” (v717 = 8, WKCURRJOB = 50)
  • “Unskilled manual” (v717 = 9, WKCURRJOB = 50)
  • “Don’t know” (v717 = 98, WKCURRJOB = 97)
  • Missing (v717 = 99, WKCURRJOB = 98)
