Converting additional measures similar to the iPUMS contextual determinants of health

I want to use the iPUMS CDOH measures, and would like to convert other external measures to equivalent ratios. For example using this Mapping Police Violence data: Airtable - Mapping Police Violence. I am wondering if this would even be possible to do, since I don’t have the denominator (number of persons in a certain county within a racial group).

Dear Julia,

In order to convert other external measures to equivalent ratios, I recommend downloading county-level American Community Survey (ACS) data and use them as the denominator. If you look at the codebook for the county residential segregation measure, we list the ACS data table used to calculate it. You can acquire the same data table(s) from ACS and use them as denominators for your own measure. You can also examine the code we used to create the measure to see what data tables were used.

Sincerely,

IPUMS NHGIS provides summary data from the U.S. census and American Community Survey on population characteristics like racial composition at the county level and other geographic levels. You may find this data source useful to pair with other datasets, such as the Mapping Police Violence dataset, to calculate ratios.
