Consistency of whymove coding and questionnaire

Hi,

I just found that the coding for whymove is not consistent with the questionnaire. For example, foreclosure is listed as 19, but if I looked at the survey question, it is coded 13. Could you please check what exactly the code is?

You are correct that the 2019 ASEC codebook lists the code for “foreclosure” as 13 in the NXTRES source variable. The WHYMOVE variable, found in IPUMS CPS, harmonizes these codes to enable comparisons of this variable over time. So, NXTRES==13 is equivalent to WHYMOVE==19. Therefore, if you are using the data from IPUMS CPS, then you can safely follow the codes and labels detailed on the codes tab of the WHYMOVE variable description.
