Does anyone know what types of farmworkers are included in OCC2010 code 6050 (Agricultural workers, nec)?
The variable OCC2010 is created from OCC. OCC uses different coding schemes in different years of data. In OCC2010, the OCC codes from all years from 1950 to 2022 are harmonized into the Census Bureau’s 2010 occupation classification system. Below, I list the OCC codes corresponding to OCC2010 code 6050 for each IPUMS USA sample.
In the 1950 1% sample - 820 (farm laborers, wage workers) and 830 (farm laborers, unpaid family workers) and 840 (farm service laborers, self-employed).
In all 1960 samples - 901 (farm foremen) and 902 (farm laborers, wage workers) and 903 (farm laborers, unpaid family workers) and 905 (farm service laborers, self-employed).
In all 1970 samples - 822 (farm laborers, wage workers) and 823 (farm laborers, unpaid family workers) and 824 (farm service laborers, self-employed) and 846 (farm laborers and farm foremen — allocated).
In all 1980 and 1990 samples - 479 (farm workers) and 480 (farm laborers and foremen — allocated) and 483 (marine life cultivation workers) and 484 (nursery workers).
In all 2000, 2001, and 2002 samples - 605 (miscellaneous agricultural workers, including animal breeders) and 602 (animal breeders)
In all 2003 and 2004 samples - 6050 (miscellaneous agricultural workers, including animal breeders) and 6020 (animal breeders)
In all samples from 2005-onward - 6050 (miscellaneous agricultural workers, including animal breeders)
If you are interested in viewing a list of the occupation titles that were coded into each occupation code by the Census Bureau, I have listed some documentation below for each year. For example, in the 2000 occupation codes, code 605 includes occupation titles such as “bee robber,” “bee tender,” “bee worker,” “beekeeper,” “beet topper,” “beet worker,” “berry picker, exc. machine operator” “berry picker, machine operator,” “berry planter,” “binder operator,” “bog worker,” and many others. In some cases, industry also dictates how occupation titles are coded. For example, only bog workers in industries 017 (crop production) or 029 (support activities for agriculture and forestry) were coded as being miscellaneous agricultural workers. Bog workers in industry 047 (nonmetallic mineral mining and quarrying) were instead coded as occupation 694, miscellaneous extraction workers.

Beginning in 1980, the occupational classification system used by the Census Bureau was modeled after the Standard Occupational Classification System (SOC), so these documents may also be useful:
