Good morning, I am working with PERWT and HHWT from the IPUMS 2010 ACS data in STATA. How do I know which weights to use? I think the weights should be treated as f-weights?? The other options are p-weights, a-weights, or i-weights. Thank you!
This is the chart that I’m replicating, but focusing only on immigrants in the Los Angeles metropolitan statistical area: http://migration.oxfordjournals.org/content/1/1/75/T2.expansion.html
We typically advise using fweight or pweight for IPUMS-USA, which you can learn about in the Stata help file on weights. In general, you will want to use the probability weight (pweight). However, fweight can be used to generate simple counts and frequencies. The counts should be identical under either specification, and fweight can sometimes be faster. You might find this page helpful when determining weights.
I hope this helps.
