I have been working on a project digitizing the 1900,1910,1920 enumeration district maps for San Francisco. I have completed the digitization and have merged in the IPUMS USA microdata on “ENUMDIST”. The 1900 and 1920 data look very reasonable (with a few minor anomalies for 1900), but there seems to be a significant problem with the 1910 data. In particular, it seems that there are no observations assigned to enumeration districts 21,224,283-294. I am starting to suspect that many observations have been mis-assigned. For instance, district 282 seems to have far too many observations. I am attaching a map illustrating the issue. Thank you for any advice!
Thank you for bringing this discrepancy to our attention. After reviewing the data, I can confirm that enumeration district 75000282 in 1910 includes all households in districts 282-294. Our historical data team will work to update the data on the website to provide the correct enumeration district for these households. In the meantime, I have sent you a crosswalk that assigns households to their correct district. Other users who would like access to this crosswalk should email the user support team at ipums@umn.edu.
Please let us know if you encounter any other issues or discrepancies in the data!
