Is there anyway to identify the survey respondent’s spouse’s birthplace?

Yes, this is possible by using the [IPUMS derived family interrelationship variables](https://cps.ipums.org/cps/new_pointers.shtml), and specifically the [Attach Characteristics tool](https://cps.ipums.org/cps-action/faq#ques34). Once you have the birthplace variable ([BPL](https://cps.ipums.org/cps-action/variables/BPL#codes_section)) added into your data extract, you can attach the birthplace of a respondent’s spouse by clicking the “Attach Characteristics” button on the Extract Request page. This will provide various options for attaching the characteristics of a respondent’s mother, father, and spouse. This will create a new variable, called bpl\_sp, that identifies the birthplace of a respondent’s spouse.
