# Pre-1970 Population Data for County Subdivisions and Places

I would like to be able access total (decennial) population data for county subdivisions and places going as far back as 1790. Unfortunately, I am only able to access a time series table for total (decennial) population for county subdivisions and places from 1970 to 2010. I’ve tried several different ways to filter the data to what I need, but I end up with the same result.

Are total (decennial) population data simple not available pre-1970 for county subdivisions and places?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

IPUMS NHGIS has no data tables for county subdivisions or places for years before 1970. See the NHGIS [Data Availability page](https://www.nhgis.org/data-availability) for a general overview. Such tables are available in print and in [scanned PDFs](https://www.census.gov/library/publications.html) but, to my knowledge, not yet in an analysis-ready format.

You may also consider generating your own tables for places and county subdivisions from microdata available through [IPUMS USA](http://usa.ipums.org/usa/).
