# for census data of P.R. China: where can I find urban/rural identifier?

Dear IPUMS:

I’m current using 1982 and 1990 Census data of China. I know the census was conducted with the knowledge of the urban/rural status of the residents. Yet, I have not been able to find such information in the datasets available on IPUMS International.

Please advise,

Unfortunately, urban/rural status was not included on the Public Use file IPUMS-International used to generate the P.R. China Census Samples. However, [the geography variables](https://international.ipums.org/international-action/variables/group/h-geog?variableType=HARMONIZED) may help to identify households as being either Urban or Rural by linking the specific geographies to an official list of urban/rural areas.
