# Can you determine the states people move from to a certain state?

I am trying to figure out what states the most people move from to my state of KY. Is this possible?

I think that the IPUMS USA variable [MIGPLAC1](https://usa.ipums.org/usa-action/variables/MIGPLAC1#description_section) will give you exactly the information you are looking for. For individuals who report living in a different house 1 year ago this variable identifies the state in which they lived 1 year ago. There are also other migration variables available through IPUMS USA, which are sporadically available in various samples. You may want to give [these variables](https://usa.ipums.org/usa-action/variables/group?id=mig) a look as well.
