I’m studying women in the armed forces in various countries and was thinking of using the OCCUPATION, ISCO general and SEX variables in combination, but I’m not sure how and could use suggestions or tips!
It looks like you are on the right track. In most (but not all) samples you should be able to calculate the share of women in the armed forces using the combination of variables you’ve listed above. Within each sample, you can likely cross-tabulate occupation and sex to see the share of women within each occupation category. Note that some IPUMS-International samples require individual-level weighting and some sample don’t as they are “flat” or unweighted samples. You can find more information about this under the PERWT variable description and comparability tab.
I hope this helps.
